Well, apparently I'm pissing off a few people on social media. It never occurred to me that someone would find my posts offensive, not that I really care anyway. Most people that know me also know I'm pretty straightforward. I'm not one to sugar coat anything. I don't try to go out of my way to insult or offend others but I guess I have. Will I apologize for it? Hell no.
When I post to my social media page, I do it for my enjoyment. It is my page. The quotes I post are for me. I use them to pick up my spirits when I'm down. I use them to help keep me motivated when I don't want to exercise. I use them to keep me focused when building my website is driving me crazy. If they help others for the same reason, excellent. But, I didn't post them to hurt or offend anyone else.
The whole crux of the matter comes down to the fact that I keep telling people to get off their fat asses and move. If they don't want too, that's fine. But, I don't want to listen to stories about their weight gain. How they haven't been healthy for years. They can't breathe. They're having problems getting up the stairs. It goes on and on and on. They hate how they feel but they won't spend one a single minute to improve their quality of life.
I don't fat shame others and I don't preach at them about the benefits of physical fitness but if you ask me for my opinion, you're damn well going to get it.
I truly believe that half the health problems for seniors would disappear if they just got up and started moving. I know you worked hard all your life to retire and relax, but that doesn't mean you can just stop. If the powers that be wanted us to be a vegetable, we wouldn't have legs or a brain.
I do understand that some people have physical limitations and some are worse than others. There are certain exercises I can't do but I try very hard to work with them. Most disabilities can be improved with some form of exercise. So unless the doctor has put firm restrictions on what you can and cannot do, you have to get up and get moving. I know it can be painful when you start but trust me, it will get easier. Don't let your brain bully your body into thinking you can't do it. If you can get up and walk to the fridge to get a quart of ice-cream, you can get up and workout.
Physical fitness is the best gift that we can give to ourselves and it doesn't have to cost you a dime. Eating right is just using common sense and there's precious little of that going on today. If you can't pronounce the words on the label, don't eat it.
So to all my friends, I will continue to post the things I do and if you feel pressured, offended, or bitched at, feel free to unfriend me. I'm not about to change who I am to accommodate you. I will forever tell you to get moving. I will always tell you that becoming a senior isn't the beginning of the end.
Life is what you make it.
Hi -- I came here via the shout-out from Living Richly in Retirement. I'm curious about your experiences on social media -- any particular platform? What annoyed people? I've been expanding my social media presence as well, and it is a rocky road.
ReplyDeleteI've been using my facebook page. Most of the negativity comes from friends. They get upset when I tell them they have to use it or lose it. I'm not trying to force anyone to get up and moving, it's entirely up to them. But, they don't like to be told what could happen if they don't. I don't single anyone out. As I said most of what I post is for motivation for myself but some think I'm talking about them. I guess they're feeling guilty. I do have to tell you for every one of the complaints I get, I also get a couple of shares, so someone is listening.
DeleteHave a great day.
