Rough Roads Ahead

It's Friday the 13th. I didn't realize it until I started writing. I'm not superstitious so it doesn't bother me in any way. What is interesting is the fact that it's Friday the 13th, it's also a New Moon tonight and for the first time in over a month, we are having some much-needed rain. Very auspicious.

Life is starting to settle down a bit but I know there will be more rough roads ahead before this move is complete in September. Now that I've finally taken steps to look at places I'm feeling a bit more settled. I know what my options are and I'm moving forward regardless of the outcome. I can't control what is happening but I can make the best choices available to me to make sure the end result gives us what we need.

We sold the truck yesterday and I admit it was sad to see it go. We had no other choice. We won't find another place big enough to park it and it has been costing us too much money in repairs. The money will pay for a new fridge if we get a townhouse and I'm going to have faith that we will. I also save about $40 per month for insurance.

The popup trailer is going into storage but if we don't use it in the next year it too will be going up for sale. To be completely honest I would like to convince Michael to sell it before we move. That would be an extra $2000 in our account plus we don't have to pay $200 per year for storage. I'll give him a week or two to get over the shock of selling the truck first. We could use the proceeds from the sale to buy the tent of our dreams with whatever else we need to go camping. The thing is we don't camp as often as we use too. And, we can put a tent up much faster than the trailer and it takes up much less space.

I also went looking for cheaper internet and phone service. You'd be surprised what you can find when you're focused and desperate to save money. I've decided Eastlink is no longer affordable for us and we are switching over to Vianet. At the moment Eastlink is costing us $150 per month and going up in December to $175. This is crazy. I can get the same service with Vianet for $81. That will be a savings of $91 per month. I'll take it.

We applied with Retirement Living earlier this week for a townhouse which will probably put us on Laurier or Warsaw in Elliot Lake. I'm leaning towards Laurier because there are no parking fees. If Mike and I want to be on our own with no borders, then we have to stay within our budget. If the townhouses are a bust it means we move to an apartment and if that's the case we will forgo Retirement Living and go with the Windemere Apartments on Mississauga. Once we know where we're going, I'll have an idea what to keep and what to get rid of.

So all in all things are looking up and I'm beginning to see that wee dot of light at the end of the tunnel. I'm feeling confident again that everything will work out for the best and we'll do just fine regardless of the outcome. Both of us are quite adaptable and we'll find a way to make it work.

  1. We had a small teardrop trailer, but repairs and storage costs were adding up. We donated it for the tax write-off before we moved to our retirement home, where there was no place to park it anyway. We inventoried all camping gear, and the only thing we had to replace was an old air mattress. The tent is still in great shape. We went tent camping for the first time in many years, and it was great! You are right -- easier than maneuvering the trailer. We did buy a cargo carrier that goes on the old trailer hitch, and that's great for additional gear.

    1. We wanted a pop-up for years and now that we have one, I realize it's more work than I want to do. All of our camping gear is in great shape except the tent and sleeping bags. I'm actually looking at one of the new tents that set up over your SUV. The gear goes in the back of the van, you sleep in the tent and there's a small screened in area to get out of the sun. Takes ten minutes to set up. I guess we'll see what happens. I really do need to give him time to get over the shock of selling the truck. He really didn't think it was going to sell.
